Summer Lake (2023) Original Oil Painting by Zakhar Shevchuk
125 x 85 x 2cm (unframed)
£2,824.28
Original artwork description
From across a room, Summer Lake feels almost weightless: a wide, luminous field of pale green, aqua and warm sand. The lake is not outlined in the traditional sense. It emerges gradually from a cool central shape, a concentration of reflected light and a few deep blue marks that suggest movement across the water.
Closer viewing reveals how physical the apparently gentle surface is. Zakhar Shevchuk layers translucent paint with dry scumbles, broader opaque strokes and small areas of impasto. Violet-grey gestures on the right and delicate white lines near the lower edge hover between natural fragments and abstraction. They might evoke branches, reeds, ripples or reflections, but the artist deliberately leaves them open.
Without a fixed horizon, the composition feels part landscape, part aerial memory. The work captures less the appearance of a specific lake than the experience of summer beside water: heat softening contours, glare merging land and sky, and time seeming to slow. Its substantial horizontal format creates a calm focal point, while the subtle surface and unresolved forms offer new visual discoveries at close range.
