In my painting Spanish Dancer, I return to my Museum Series to portray a museum visitor completely engrossed in Joan Miró’s iconic masterwork with the same title.

Miró’s piece famously rejects conventional painting; instead of showing a realistic dancer, he breaks the figure down into basic symbols, simple lines, and shapes to capture the intense rhythm, movement, and energy of flamenco. Miró wasn’t trying to show what the dance looks like, but rather what it feels like.
