Six Yellow Petals (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Zakhar Shevchuk

In Six Yellow Petals, Zakhar Shevchuk reduces the figure of a seated dog to a flowing arrangement of grey, charcoal and brown brushstrokes. The animal remains recognisable, yet its anatomy continually slips towards abstraction: long ears descend through the composition, while repeated arcs and loops create the impression of a body assembled through movement rather than conventional drawing.

Beside the dog stands a tiny yellow flower with six petals – an easily missed detail that Shevchuk deliberately elevates through the title. Its simplicity and delicacy contrast with the large, strange and almost monumental animal, introducing an understated tenderness into the composition.

Painted in 2026, the work reflects Shevchuk’s increasingly direct expressionist approach to figurative painting. Recognition is never abandoned, but neither is it allowed to become fixed. Viewed from different distances, Six Yellow Petals can shift between dog portrait, gestural figure and near-abstraction.
