My process begins with observing and responding to a place, making notes and taking photographs which I later use as references in the studio, memory and imagination play their part in the creative process. From these initial impressions, I work intuitively, building the painting through successive layers.
I begin with brushwork to establish the underlying colours and forms, before developing the surface with expressive impasto techniques. Layer upon layer is applied using a palette knife, allowing the paint to build texture, depth and movement. I also draw upon the optical colour-mixing techniques associated with the Impressionists, placing colours alongside one another so that they interact and blend visually within the finished work.
I continue to develop the painting intuitively until it reaches a natural conclusion.
The painting continues around the deep canvas edges and is signed on the front. No frame is required, allowing the textured edges to remain part of the artwork, and it arrives ready to hang.
A peaceful yet evocative piece, this original painting would bring atmosphere, serenity and a touch of mystery to a contemporary interior.
