To the non-Dutch Dutchland is all about tulips, clogs, dykes, drugs, prostitutes, euthanasia and Johan Cruyff. Beaches would be the last thing the nondutchlanders would have on their list of cliches. But with a glorious sandy coastline of 451 kms, broken only by the harbours of Rotterdam, the Hague and Ijmuiden, beaches should be near the top of Dutch attractions. The manufactured sandy dunes that back-up the beach are the first line of defence against the Netherlands drowning. OK, so there are no palm trees, the weather isn't tropical, the North Sea is never azure but if you are a beach volleyballer, kite surfer, windsurfer, a (highly optimistic) surfer, dune cyclist, or someone who likes hanging around in beach cafes eating pizza and watching the sunset with a beer in hand then the Netherlands is the perfect place for you.
