Rose II grew from my interest in isolating a single natural form and giving it enough visual space to become almost monumental. The rose is presented against a quiet, open background so that attention remains on the structure of the petals, the subtle color shifts and the relationship between the flower and light.
I worked slowly, building the image through careful observation and controlled layers of oil paint. Particular attention was given to the delicate transitions in the petals, the texture of the leaves and the sense of depth between the flower and the background.
What makes this painting special to me is its balance between realism and stillness. Although the subject is simple, I wanted the rose to feel present and almost sculptural, while preserving a sense of softness and calm.
