Original artwork description
White Rose focuses on a single flower isolated against a quiet gray background. I was interested in the contrast between the delicate, pale petals and the darker stem and leaves, as well as the way subtle changes in light define the flower without disturbing the simplicity of the composition.
The painting was developed slowly, with close attention to the structure of the petals, the transitions between warm and cool whites, and the different surface qualities of the flower, leaves and stem. The restrained background allows the rose to remain the clear visual focus.
What makes this work special to me is its simplicity. With very few elements, the painting relies almost entirely on proportion, light, color and spatial presence to create its atmosphere.
