When people migrate, they don’t arrive empty. They carry their roots with them — their habits, their culture, their sense of self.
The phrase “to put down roots” is usually hopeful. It means to settle, to begin a new life in new soil. But for those who have left their homeland, it can also feel heavy. To put down roots in a foreign country is to accept that you may not return. It is a quiet decision to stay.
And yet the roots we bring are not neutral. They are full of memory, language, and identity. They continue to live even when the future feels uncertain — like a white, hollow shell that has not yet taken shape.
This painting was born from that tension.
It speaks to the experience of many Ukrainian refugees and others who have been forced to rebuild their lives far from home. It is about belonging and not belonging at the same time. About carrying your history while standing in unfamiliar ground.
“Roots” is both personal and collective — a visual meditation on what we take with us, and what it means to begin again.
