Quiet (2024) Original Oil Painting by Dick van Dijk

In Quiet, Dick van Dijk depicts a reclining figure, the head tilted to one side, between wakefulness and sleep, presence and absence. The painting uses a muted palette of earthy neutrals, cool greys and subdued blue and purple tones, with warmer accents across the face. The features are loosely rendered, with indistinct contours and areas of colour that blend into one another. The background is not merely a setting but an active part of the image, its shifting tones and indistinct forms flowing into the figure and disrupting the boundaries between body and environment. Accidental marks, unexpected colour combinations, and irregular transitions become integral to the work's character. In the process of painting Van Dijk explores intimacy, vulnerability, and quiet surrender.
