Priest (2019) Original Oil Painting by Augustin Razvan Radu

60 x 80 x 3cm (unframed)

£1,028.88

I started working on this series of paintings after being invited to participate in a group exhibition titled 'Filth' (Jeg). Around that time, the media was flooded with the news of a priest found to have engaged in sexual acts with several young men. Prompted by this story, I created a painting depicting a priest with traces of semen on his cassock. Later on, I reflected on how hard it must be for a priest to suppress his primal instincts and renounce the pleasures of this world—pleasures that, according to church doctrine, can lead him straight to hell. That’s why I tried to portray these priests as exhausted and with dark circles under their eyes. However, I couldn't stay entirely serious throughout the process, which is visible in some of the works.
