Orrery (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Charles BEALL

An orrery is a mechanical model of the solar system, with the planets mounted on rods around a central sun. Here the sun is a disc of silver and gold leaf in concentric rings, with a gold cylinder standing out from its centre. Around it, planes of deep blue, oxblood and dark grey, and two planks of richly grained found wood, are arranged on a black ground, and two smaller bodies orbit at the edges: a dark wooden cylinder set on blue, and one capped in copper leaf on red.

Seen straight on, the composition is calm and balanced. Seen from the side, the cylinders project from the surface like the arms of a mechanism, and the work becomes something closer to an instrument, a quiet machine for measuring the heavens.
