A natural phenomenon in which clouds glow on the horizon at night. They are quite rare and do not occur often, although they seem to have been appearing more frequently in recent years. I saw them whilst I was out on the water on the Frisian Lakes: amazing! However, the ice crystals covering these noctilucent clouds reflect sunlight, creating a bright glow through which the stars remain visible. Their shapes change relatively quickly because there are very strong air currents at the altitude where the clouds are found – sometimes reaching speeds of 500 to 700 km/h. The characteristic waves and ripples disappear just as quickly as they appeared.
