"Night Sentinel" Copper Wall Relief (2025) Original Relief by Jeremy Maronpot
53.98 x 78.74 x 3.81cm

Original artwork description
An abstract owl is perched among architectural and natural forms in this handcrafted metal wall sculpture. The owl's curves echo the geometry around it, bringing organic and manmade elements together in an overlapping composition. Columns, arches and steps give the design an old-world feel, while the contemporary style keeps it modern and open to interpretation. Only one has been made.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
This sculpture was created by hand from a single sheet of copper, without adding or removing material, using manual metal forming methods. Though it looks like a solid copper slab, the sculpture is a metal shell roughly as thick as a penny. Inside the formed copper shell is a wood support structure that adds internal stability and provides a place to secure the hanging hardware.
The three-dimensional surface was driven directly into the metal by countless hammer strikes, leaving a rich surface texture of tool marks that tell the story of its construction. Using hand-held hammers, punches and air-powered hammers, high points of the design were pushed up from the back side of the sheet metal, and recessed areas were driven down from the front. The form was pushed into the metal gradually, between rounds of heating the metal to soften it, until a raised relief was created about 1/4 inch deep.
Please note, this artwork is intended for indoor display only because the internal wooden components are not suitable for moisture or outdoor conditions.
FINISH AND PATINA
A dark brown and black patina enhances the sculpture's physical depth and hammer textured surfaced. The color was developed through a natural oxidation process accelerated using salts, acids and checmicals. This patina is chemically bonded to the metal and will continue to slowly evolve naturally over time. The sculpture is sealed with Renaissance Wax, a museum-grade wax developed by the British Museum for preservation. It provides a protective barrier that slows further oxidation. Unlike synthetic clear coats, the wax does not yellow, crack or permanently alter the copper. Reapplying the wax every few years can help preserve the finish and restore luster, but is not required.
DIMENSIONS AND HANGING
The sculpture measures 31 inches tall by 21 ¼ inches wide, with a depth of 1 ⅜ inches. The sculpture weighs approximately 30 pounds and hangs flush against the wall on a french cleat style hanger.
