colour sumi calligraphy inks on Nepal handmade paper, 15.5 x 18.5 in, 39.5 x 47 cm
Another one that goes way back…This was inspired by my travels to Nepal at that time. And that’s where I got this unbleached handmade paper used for this painting. Then I moved to Canada’s west coast with another scenery lined with high mountains.
The sumi inks used at that time were the type I would grind on a wet stone. I could get a strong colour which has yet never faded. This handmade Nepali parchment paper is strong yet pliable. Some portions of this page are very thin, yet never torn. My paintings in that period were done on location, without preliminary sketches nor any working lines on the paper. This is paint applied directly on a blank page.
The close up picture allows a feel for the brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s me with the painting for perspective.
