Most of this painting is air, and that is the point. The Japanese call such an interval ma: not emptiness, but the space that lets everything around it be seen. Two dense masses of branches, one pouring in from the upper left corner, the other rising from the lower right, reach toward each other with hair-fine twigs and never quite meet. Violet petals, thick and ridged where the palette knife lifted away, mix with fresh lime leaves, forest green and the occasional pale yellow bud. Between them the canvas is given over to soft olive and mist-green spray and open linen, with a few pale glows floating in it like light through leaves. Anastassia Skopp paints without a sketch: she sets the direction, the branch decides where it lands, and the largest part of this canvas is the part where the hand stopped. One slow breath in front of it is all it asks.
At this scale it holds a wall on its own: against warm plaster, soft grey or deep blue-grey, the violet and olive read clearly, and the natural linen tone sits easily beside wood and soft textiles.
Medium: Mixed media (acrylic and spray paint) on 100% linen canvas
