With an elongated white dog occupying almost the entire width of a luminous green canvas, Long Dog turns extreme simplicity into character. The animal resembles a greyhound or whippet, but Zakhar Shevchuk deliberately pushes its proportions beyond naturalism: legs stretch downwards like narrow columns, the torso becomes an extended horizontal plane, and the pointed head is reduced to only a handful of lines.

The use of charcoal alongside acrylic is central to the painting’s character. Black contours remain visibly provisional, sometimes doubling or departing from the painted edges beneath them. These marks give the image the immediacy of observational drawing rather than a polished animal portrait. Pale greys and whites make the dog appear almost weightless against the much stronger surrounding green.

There is also an intriguing uncertainty about movement. The animal looks built for speed, yet Shevchuk has caught it in an ambiguous state that could be standing, walking or just beginning to move. With no horizon or narrative detail to resolve the scene, the solitary dog exists within a field of colour. Long Dog becomes both an affectionate animal image and a study in expressive reduction – how far a familiar form can be simplified while retaining its unmistakable identity.
