ABOUT THE ART WORK
Light Through Avakas Gorge captures a hidden passage in Cyprus where sunlight suddenly breaks through the dense vegetation and rocky walls, transforming the secluded landscape from within.
The composition leads the eye along the shallow stream toward an intense opening of light. Around it, the gorge remains rich and shadowed — tangled branches, rugged stone and reflections in the water are built from layers of deep greens, violets, earthy reds and blues. Against these darker tones, the luminous yellows, creams and warm ochres at the centre become almost radiant.
I painted the scene with energetic, heavily textured brushwork, allowing the physical character of the oil paint to echo the rough surfaces of stone, moving water and vegetation. Rather than describing every detail literally, I wanted colour and texture to carry the experience of the place — the coolness inside the gorge, the movement of reflections and the sudden warmth of Mediterranean sunlight ahead.
This painting belongs to my continuing exploration of landscapes discovered through travel. I am especially drawn to moments when light changes our perception of a place and turns a real landscape into something remembered emotionally. In Avakas Gorge, that moment appears as a luminous passage through shadow — a quiet discovery hidden within the wild landscape of Cyprus.
