Juni Large Abstract Painting-
The tradition of the Săliște winter customs is a fascinating window into Romanian heritage. Each December 6th, young boys of the village, known as “juni,” would gather at a host’s house to choose a leader (“jude”) and 12 fellow carolers. These young men organized festive events, caroling, and games, which were pivotal moments in village life—especially for forming future marriages. This initiation into the “juni” was a profound rite of passage, marking the transition from boyhood to manhood.
The “juni” carols, sung polyphonically, celebrated themes like the wisdom of the host, the beauty of young women, the bravery of young men, and fairytale engagements. These songs blended idyllic and epic storytelling, offering a rich cultural tapestry of Romania’s spiritual life.
This painting is part of a collection of 14 works showcasing the most important celebrations of the Romanian pastoral year, inspired by the traditions, mythology, and culture of Mărginimea Sibiului, one of Romania’s most authentic regions. These pieces are created in chronological order, although not necessarily displayed that way here.
The celebratory year of Mărginimea Sibiului reflects three cultural layers:
An ancestral religion, now only present in fragments.
A middle layer rooted in solar worship and the Mithraic cult.
The Christian layer, where early Christian leaders repurposed existing celebrations (e.g., the Winter Solstice became Christmas, and a Thracian thunder god’s day became Saint Elijah’s celebration).
