Held in Black 2 continues my exploration of figures emerging from darkness. I wanted this portrait to feel both strong and vulnerable, with the crown and luminous details suggesting quiet power rather than grandeur.
Layers of oil paint and texture have been built up across the dress and surrounding areas, creating a surface that changes as the light moves across it. These textured elements add depth and character, while the soft treatment of the face creates a contrast between delicacy and strength.
The glowing crosses and subtle marks in the background bring an almost spiritual quality to the work, inviting the viewer to create their own story. I am drawn to paintings that leave questions unanswered, and this piece is intended to hold that sense of mystery.
