Held In Black 1 (2025) Original Oil Painting by Lorna Mousley

This painting is part of my exploration of light emerging from darkness. I wanted the figure to feel as though she is appearing from the black background rather than simply standing in front of it.

I also added layers of texture throughout the painting to give the surface a tactile quality. These textures catch the light in different ways, making the work feel more dimensional and adding to its quiet, atmospheric presence.

The glowing details of her dress and headpiece catch the light and create a contrast with the dark surroundings, giving the work a quiet, almost dreamlike quality. Her expression is calm and thoughtful, leaving space for the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the piece.

I am always drawn to creating portraits that feel slightly mysterious, where not everything is revealed at first glance. For me, Held in Black I is about presence, strength and beauty found in stillness.
