Gesture in light (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Anika De Souza

60 x 60cm (unframed)

£1,800

Gesture of Light unfolds as an expansive, atmospheric field where colour and mark move in quiet tension. The painting is built through translucent washes of warm yellow – ranging from soft, diffused tones to saturated, sun-like intensity – spilling across the surface and bleeding into the raw ground. The flow of pigment suggests both illumination and erosion, as if the image is shaped by light itself.
At the edges and within the field, gestures emerge – loose graphite lines, scattered red markings, and concentrated areas of agitation where the surface thickens and contracts. These moments interrupt the openness, grounding the work in physical action and trace.
Language enters subtly, embedded within the composition as a fragmentary presence. Reassembled through an intuitive process of cutting and layering, the text appears as a dispersed, poetic structure:
Immersive landscape
Shaped wilderness
Writing layered stories
As in much of the artist’s practice, the words do not remain fixed. They drift toward abstraction, dissolving into gestural marks that carry meaning through movement rather than legibility. The writing becomes part of the terrain – something sensed rather than read.
The painting holds a delicate balance between openness and disturbance, stillness and energy. Gesture of Light exists as a fleeting moment – where landscape, language, and gesture converge, and where light itself becomes a form of drawing.
