Gapstow 2 (2024) Original Oil Painting by Anthony Galati

The bridge so nice, I painted it twice. This is a second version of Gapstow Bridge, one of my favorites in New York City's Central Park, from a slightly different vantage point.

The light is different here than in the first one — the sun sits lower, which lets us explore how much changes when more of a scene falls into shadow. It's always interesting to see how different the same place can look under different light. Without light we'd see nothing at all; once there is a light source, it decides how everything else will appear. I love watching the different trees turn slightly different greens. And the symmetrical, hard stone of the bridge stands in stark contrast to the organic sprawl of everything growing around it.

And who doesn't want their bridge with a side of ivy?
