First Light (2026) Monoprint by Lizzie Butler
60.5 x 57 x 0.1cm (unframed) / 50 x 44cm (actual image size)
£270
Original artwork description
Moody and atmospheric, this monoprint suggests faraway lands, in a swirling, misty early morning light.
This monoprint is created using an etched steel plate, that has been individually inked with colour. This method of etching creates a 'mono print', as each print varies according to the application of the coloured inks.
This piece has a deep green foreground, where the light is beginning to spill. Above this sits the bridge, inked in black. Then purple light is emerging across this land, with a deep blue ink used to describe the lightening night sky.
To create this monoprint I have used a steel plate, throughly sanded (to create a smooth surface to work on), acid and burnishing. The print, professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and selectively removed. The image is created by placing the inked plate onto the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, hand made (in cotton), white paper, on top. The press is then 'hand wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper.
Image/plate size 50 x 44 cm
Paper size 60.5 x 57 cm
This print is signed, titled and numbered 1/1 (as artwork is an individual, one off 'mono print'). It will be sent to you wrapped in tissue paper, in a sturdy cardboard tube.
