Original artwork description
A beautiful atmospheric oil painting by Mel Davies.
A stag and doe move along a snow-packed track through a tall pine forest at first or last light. The stag is front and right, head high, antlers clean against the mist, watching. The smaller doe is a few strides behind to the left, mid-step, following the same path. They are not running; they are pausing, which gives the whole piece its quiet tension.
Framed them with snow-laden pines on both sides, their trunks in loose verticals of deep green, umber and Payne's grey. The forest floor is a wash of cool blues, lavender and icy white, broken with touches of ochre where the track has been trodden. In the distance the trees dissolve into a soft golden haze — that low winter sun burning through frost — and it draws the eye straight down the centre, right between the two animals. this piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.
