Fantasy Aurora Lake (2018) Original Oil Painting by Tetiana Surshko

60 x 80 x 1cm (unframed) / 60 x 80cm (actual image size)

Fantasy Aurora Lake is a northern night turned up to full color: a sky of violet, magenta, gold and yellow with a white ribbon of aurora and a dusting of stars, snow capped mountains in blue and white, two dark pines on a rocky shore, and a lake that carries the whole sky back in pink, orange, lime and turquoise. It is an expressive, dreamlike landscape rather than a realistic one, a place I invented from memories of real mountain lakes and the aurora photographs that I could not stop looking at.

The painting belongs to my Luminous Landscapes series, where I chase light in nature, from misty mornings to glowing dusks. This is the wildest light in the group. I wanted the sky to feel like it is moving, so the colors blend into each other without hard edges and the stars are flicked across the top in tiny white specks, while the mountains and trees below are sharp and dark to hold the composition steady. The reflection in the water is painted in broken horizontal strokes, so the lake glows but still reads as water.

The canvas measures W x H cm (W x H in), a vertical format that works on a narrow wall, in a bedroom, a child's room, a hallway or a study, and it reads clearly from across the room because of the strong contrast between the dark foreground and the bright sky.

It is painted in oil on stretched canvas, the sky blended with soft brushes and the mountains, rocks and water built up with a palette knife, so the surface shifts from smooth to textured as you move down the painting. The work is signed and varnished, the sides are painted, and it arrives ready to hang with no frame needed.

It ships stretched on its wooden bars in a sturdy protective box, never rolled, by tracked and insured courier from Lisbon, Portugal, usually within 3 to 5 working days. Keep it away from direct sunlight and damp, dust it with a soft dry cloth, and the varnish will protect the colors for decades. If you have a question about the painting or would like to see it in a particular interior, send me a message, I reply quickly.

About
Colour is the engine of everything I paint. I'm drawn to the moment when an ordinary thing turns intense — a bouquet that burns like fire, a wave a second... Read more
