Original artwork description
This watercolour was painted from observation at Kew Gardens in autumn. I noticed the wild apple tree, with fallen leaves and small apples scattered underneath it, and wanted to capture the slightly messy but beautiful feeling of the scene.
Rather than reproducing the scene exactly, I used vivid greens, pink-red lines and flashes of high-key colour to give the orchard an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Transparent watercolour washes are combined with drawn marks, allowing the image to remain loose and spontaneous while holding onto the changing textures of the season.
