This is one of my warmest paintings to date - a deep, glowing red built up slowly until it stopped looking flat and started looking like something lit from within. Roses surface out of it in white and soft yellow, catching light the way coals do at the centre of a dying fire, when the flame is gone but the heat is still moving under the surface. The branches sit low across the canvas, thick and unhurried. What I was after here is a velvet kind of warmth - the feeling of a winter evening with red wine and a fireplace, the kind of warmth that wraps around you and holds you after a restless, stressful day.
