'Elegy' depicts a man entirely absorbed in a masterpiece from Robert Motherwell's Elegy to the Spanish Republic series. Consisting of over 150 paintings, this iconic series serves as an elegy—a solemn, abstract lament for the human suffering of the Spanish Civil War (1936 -1939).

Motherwell’s monumental compositions are celebrated for their stark visual rhythm. These recurring visual elements act as metaphors for the permanent cycle of life and death, reminding us that even amidst deep tragedy, human resilience and vitality always prevail.
