Distant Fields (2025) Original Oil Painting by Hannah Ivory Baker

49 x 39 x 6cm (framed)

£1,600

Distant Fields is an expressive oil painting exploring the openness of the landscape and the subtle shifts in colour, light and atmosphere across the countryside.

Loosely worked passages of paint suggest fields stretching towards a distant horizon, with areas of colour and texture moving between abstraction and representation. Rather than describing a particular view in precise detail, I wanted to capture something of the experience of looking across an expansive landscape, where forms become less distinct as they recede into the distance.

I worked intuitively, using palette knives and brushes to build, scrape back and rework layers of oil paint. The composition developed gradually through the relationships between colour, tone and gesture, allowing the landscape to emerge through the painting process.

I'm particularly interested in the point at which a landscape becomes as much about memory and atmosphere as the physical place itself. Distant Fields explores that relationship, retaining a sense of openness while leaving space for the viewer's own interpretation.
