Original artwork description
“Decorative Instinct 8” is an original contemporary artwork on paper by Lena Langer, created with acrylic and markers. Part of the artist’s Decorative Instinct series, the work explores flatness, irony, and the visual language of domestic comfort through a deliberately simplified interior scene.
The composition brings together a record player, a houseplant, and a framed female portrait. These familiar domestic objects are arranged within a shallow, flattened space where perspective is intentionally reduced and decorative structure takes precedence over realism.
The palette combines dusty pink, muted coral, pale blue, soft yellow, and deep green. Strong outlines and simplified geometry give the work a graphic clarity, while the contrast between the rigid turntable, organic plant forms, and framed portrait creates a subtle visual rhythm.
Within the Decorative Instinct series, Lena Langer treats everyday interiors not as realistic spaces but as systems of recognizable visual signs. Music, plants, framed images, and domestic objects become symbols of taste, memory, comfort, and personal identity.
The record player is especially significant. It introduces associations of listening, nostalgia, and ritual, while the framed female image adds another layer of intimacy and self-reflection. Together, these objects form a compact portrait of contemporary domestic life without depicting it literally.
The work’s deliberate flatness is central to its meaning. Rather than hiding the decorative nature of the composition, Lena Langer emphasizes it, allowing color, contour, and rhythm to become the primary carriers of atmosphere.
With its compact vertical format and softly contrasting palette, “Decorative Instinct 8” is well suited to contemporary, eclectic, Scandinavian-inspired, or retro-influenced interiors. It can work particularly well in a living room, music corner, reading area, studio, bedroom, or curated gallery wall.
