Original artwork description
Cynosure is an abstract interpretation of urban experience, inspired by the visual density and layered character of New York City. Rather than depicting a specific location, the painting draws from accumulated impressions of the city—its architecture, signage, infrastructure, movement, and constant state of transformation.
The composition is built through an arrangement of geometric forms suspended within a layered green field. Rectilinear blocks of color suggest fragments of buildings, streets, windows, and constructed space, while areas of abrasion, staining, and exposed underlayers introduce a sense of weathering and time. The surface records its own history, allowing earlier decisions and marks to remain partially visible beneath subsequent layers.
Throughout the painting, structure and disruption coexist. Hard-edged forms establish order, yet they are interrupted by traces, erasures, and painterly events that resist complete control. The work reflects the experience of navigating a city where systems overlap, information accumulates, and clarity emerges only momentarily before dissolving back into complexity.
The title, Cynosure, refers to a guiding point or object of focus. In this context, the title suggests the challenge of finding orientation within an environment defined by constant visual stimulation. Amid the density of competing forms and layered information, the painting searches for moments of coherence while embracing the richness of ambiguity.
Rather than representing the city directly, Cynosure seeks to capture its rhythm: the accumulation of memory, movement, architecture, and observation into a single visual field. The work becomes less a portrait of a place than an experience of being within it.
