This original watercolour by Karolina Kijak-Dzikońska depicts a Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus) perched on a poisonous webcap mushroom. The painting was inspired by observations made during autumn plein-air sessions in the Prosna River Valley in Poland.

The Crested Tit is one of the most distinctive small birds of European coniferous forests, instantly recognisable by its pointed black-and-white crest. In this painting, however, the bird is only part of the story. I wanted to capture a fragment of its autumn habitat — the quiet atmosphere of the forest floor, its fungi, muted colours and small natural details.

In my work, I increasingly combine bird observation with careful attention to the plants, fungi and other elements that form their environment. Rather than portraying a bird in isolation, I am interested in showing it as part of a living landscape and using watercolour as a way of telling a broader story about species and the places they inhabit.

My artistic practice develops at the intersection of wildlife art, field observation and ornithology, with birds remaining at the heart of my work.
