Cosmic Nightfall (2018) Original Oil Painting by Tetiana Surshko

40 x 80 x 2cm / 40 x 80cm (actual image size)

£986.01

A tall night painting made in open homage to Van Gogh: a sky full of swirling light over a still lake, dark pines standing along both banks, and the whole heaven coming down again in the black water below. The stars are not points but spinning discs of white, gold and pale green, laid on thick with the brush so they turn slowly the longer you look. A yellow moon drops a broken column of light straight down the centre of the canvas.

I kept his logic but not his palette — cooler, more teal and violet than his wheat-gold south of France. The paint is worked in short curved strokes that follow the movement of the sky, so the surface is physically restless even though the scene is silent.

The vertical 40 x 80 format is deliberate: it lets the sky and its reflection stack, so the water becomes a second night rather than a foreground.

Oil on canvas, 40 x 80 cm, painted in 2018. Signed on the front, varnished, sides painted, sold unframed and ready to hang. Part of my In Van Gogh's Light series.

Materials used:

Oil paint, stretched cotton canvas

About
Colour is the engine of everything I paint. I'm drawn to the moment when an ordinary thing turns intense — a bouquet that burns like fire, a wave a second... Read more
