CHARLIE is a sculpture depicting a slightly sly-looking cat with a funny face. He’s a gentle soul who balances his beloved little white mouse on one paw, protecting it from other tomcats...

He is part of the CalbinoOz series, sculptures carved from natural calabash gourds that have been grown and dried in the south of France.

The calabash used to make it has been emptied of its contents – seeds and skins – so that it can be exported worldwide without any health concerns.

Like many CalbinoOz sculptures, he wears a little knitted jumper made from superfine wood cellulose that has been moulded, dried and then painted with several layers of different colours to create a mottled ceramic effect, protected after painting by a marine-grade varnish. His whiskers are made from flexible black metal wire.
