Original artwork description:

Bordeaux Cathedral
Pencil and Acrylic Gouache on Paper
Unframed: 47 x 34cm

Bordeaux Cathedral, officially known as the Primatial Cathedral of St Andrew of Bordeaux, is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Andrew. Like many buildings of its kind, it has undergone significant restoration and transformation over the centuries, taking influence from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and 20th Century design. This drawing depicts a French paratrooper at the South front of the cathedral, making for a striking yet disconcerting scene.

Completed predominantly in pencil in a photorealistic style, this piece celebrates the beauty of gothic architecture, whilst the colour figure, painted in a contemporary style, provides an unusual contrast to the historical image. This work of art forms part of a large collection of cathedral studies exploring modern society's relationship with religion.
