Blue Structural Passage is an original contemporary blue and beige abstract diptych by artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026. The artwork consists of two 70 × 90 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, stretched on wooden stretcher bars and ready to hang. Together, the two panels create a large abstract composition measuring approximately 140 × 90 cm, excluding the space between them.
I created this diptych around the idea of space opening through structure.
I wanted the blue areas to feel almost like passages of light moving through an architectural environment—not a recognizable building or landscape, but an imagined place constructed from color, texture, vertical forms and intersections.
The two canvases were developed together. They share the same visual language, yet neither is a mirror image of the other. Forms shift from one panel to the next, creating a subtle rhythm when the paintings are displayed side by side.
The palette is built around luminous powder blue, soft cornflower blue, muted denim blue and blue-grey, surrounded by quieter fields of ivory, off-white, warm beige, greige, taupe and stone grey.
These cooler and lighter areas are anchored by concentrated passages of charcoal black, espresso brown, dark umber and smoky grey. The dark vertical elements introduce weight and structure, while the blue areas create openness and visual movement.
I particularly like the relationship between the brown and blue in this work. The earthy tones give the composition stability, while the blue seems to move through and around them, changing the perceived depth of the surface.
I created both paintings with professional acrylic paints using palette knives and brushes, working through repeated layering, scraping, glazing, dry-brush techniques and expressive gestural mark-making.
Some areas were deliberately painted over and partially removed. This process reveals fragments of previous layers and creates irregular edges, scraped textures and subtle changes in opacity.
The strong vertical forms are interrupted by horizontal passages that visually connect the two canvases. At certain points, the geometry feels precise; elsewhere, it dissolves into textured marks and painterly movement.
From a distance, Blue Structural Passage appears calm and architectural. Up close, the surface becomes much more complex—broken edges, overlapping colors, scraped paint and subtle traces of earlier decisions become visible.
This contrast is central to my practice.
I am interested in the relationship between structure and movement, geometry and intuition, constructed space and spontaneous gesture. I like creating enough order to give the eye somewhere to rest, while allowing imperfections and unexpected marks to keep the painting alive.
For me, the blue passages in this diptych represent openness. They can be interpreted as light, water, sky or simply color moving through an imagined structure. I intentionally leave that interpretation unresolved.
The physical space between the two canvases is also part of the artwork. It creates a pause while allowing colors, vertical forms and horizontal lines to continue their dialogue across both paintings.
Each canvas measures 70 × 90 cm. Displayed together as intended, the diptych creates a substantial composition approximately 140 × 90 cm, excluding the gap between the panels.
Its combination of blue, beige, ivory, taupe, grey, brown and charcoal gives the work a sophisticated contemporary character, making it particularly appealing to collectors of blue abstract art, neutral abstraction, geometric painting and architectural abstraction.
Blue Structural Passage is a one-of-a-kind original abstract diptych, painted entirely by hand in 2026.
Both canvases are stretched on wooden stretcher bars and ready to hang. Each painting is signed on the front, and a Certificate of Authenticity is included.
