Blue Beyond Blue is an original fine art photograph created on location on the Isle of Harris in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. Using long-exposure photography and intentional camera movement (ICM), I photographed the extraordinary turquoise and deep blue waters of Harris to create an atmospheric coastal artwork somewhere between photography and painting. This is artist-created photographic art, made in camera from the landscape before me, with the soft movement and luminous colour arising from the photographic process.

Layers of turquoise, aqua, teal and intense Atlantic blue drift across the composition, gradually deepening towards the distant horizon. The long exposure and gentle movement of the camera soften the natural details of sea, shore and distant land, allowing them to merge into broad sweeps of colour and light. The resulting image has an almost watercolour quality while retaining its origins in the wild Hebridean landscape.

I am endlessly fascinated by the colours of the sea around Harris. Standing there with my camera, watching the light move across the water, I wanted to capture not simply what the landscape looked like, but how it felt. Blue Beyond Blue grew from that moment — a real place, a real encounter with the landscape, transformed through long exposure and intentional camera movement into something quieter and more abstract.
