Between Light and Form is an original contemporary abstract painting by Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026. Measuring 80 × 100 cm, this textured acrylic painting on canvas explores the delicate relationship between architectural structure, natural light, and the quiet transformation of space.

I created this painting around a simple idea: sometimes the most powerful visual experiences happen not through what we see clearly, but through what remains partially hidden.

I wanted to capture that fleeting moment when light touches a surface, dissolves its boundaries, and transforms something solid into something almost weightless.
The composition began with soft, luminous layers of ivory, warm white, pale cream, misty blue-grey, and delicate silver-grey tones. I gradually introduced warm beige, sand, taupe, stone grey, and muted earthy brown, creating a subtle dialogue between cool atmospheric colors and natural warmth.

To give the painting depth and a stronger architectural presence, I added expressive passages of charcoal black, deep graphite, smoky blue-black, and dark espresso brown.
These darker elements form a distinctive intersection of horizontal and vertical lines, creating a structural center within the otherwise airy composition.
The contrast between light and dark became essential to the painting's character.
As I worked, the horizontal line began to suggest a distant waterline, while the vertical forms reminded me of architectural fragments, weathered walls, or reflections appearing on a glass surface.

I deliberately avoided defining these elements too precisely.

For me, Between Light and Form exists somewhere between abstract landscape painting, geometric abstraction, and architectural abstract art. It invites the viewer to imagine their own space—a quiet waterfront, a misty landscape, an opening between buildings, or simply the meeting of light and shadow.

I developed the surface using professional acrylic paints, palette knives, and brushes, combining multiple techniques including layering, glazing, scraping, dragging, dry-brush application, and expressive mark-making.

Some layers were partially removed to reveal earlier colors, creating a rich interplay of translucent passages, irregular edges, and textured surfaces.
The central dark forms were built through repeated applications of paint, allowing small fragments of beige, grey, and blue to emerge from beneath them.
In contrast, the lighter areas remain soft and atmospheric, with subtle variations in texture that become especially visible as natural light moves across the canvas.
This balance between structured geometry and spontaneous painterly movement is one of the ideas I return to throughout my artistic practice.

I am fascinated by how architecture and nature can share the same visual language. A vertical line may suggest a building, a reflection, or a distant tree. A horizontal division can become a shoreline, a shadow, or an imagined boundary.

In this painting, I wanted those interpretations to remain fluid.

Between Light and Form is not a representation of a particular location. It is an exploration of atmosphere, perception, and the way simple geometric relationships can create an emotional sense of space.

The restrained palette of beige, ivory, white, grey, soft blue, charcoal, and brown gives the artwork a sophisticated neutral character, while its expressive dark accents create a compelling focal point.

The 80 × 100 cm vertical format makes this original abstract painting particularly suitable for contemporary living rooms, bedrooms, elegant offices, and modern minimalist interiors. Its combination of warm neutral colors and cool atmospheric shades also complements Japandi, Scandinavian, and contemporary interior design.
From a distance, the composition appears calm and balanced. Viewed closely, it reveals a complex world of delicate textures, layered colors, scraped surfaces, and expressive details.

I hope this painting offers its future owner something different with every viewing—a new association, a subtle shift in perspective, or simply a moment of visual contemplation.
