Original artwork description
Ink and wash drawing from a view of Grey Mare's Trail Waterfall near Dumfries, Scotland. The falls themselves are almost incidental here. What I was really trying to get at was the landscape that contains them: the steep, gouged valley walls, the sheer drop of rock faces that glacial movement carved out over an enormous stretch of time. There is something about that kind of terrain that resists being drawn in a tidy way, and I used tools that don't fully cooperate, which felt right for a subject with that much geological force behind it. The ink line tries to follow the logic of the rock rather than the water.
