Original artwork description
Apalis fuscigularis portrays the Taita apalis, one of the rarest birds in the world. Endemic to the Taita Hills in Kenya, the species is critically endangered, surviving only within a tiny and fragmented area of native forest.
Much of its habitat has been destroyed or transformed by human activity — cleared for agriculture or replaced with non-native timber plantations.
The work reflects on a species pushed towards extinction not by natural processes, but by the transformation of the world around it — and on how little space we leave for other species to exist.
In this series of small-scale paintings, I explore the disappearance of rare species threatened by human activity.
Through this series, I reflect on habitat destruction, overproduction, excessive consumption, and the increasing pressure human activity places on the natural world. The works are not intended as illustrations, but as quiet reminders of species that could disappear before most of us ever become aware of their existence.
