"Aestas" (Summer) 18"x18", Oil And Gold Leaf On Birch, 2024

This piece is part of a seasons series I am working on, my favorite so far. A female figure is shown reclining into a bed of lilies and geraniums with astrological like outlines and stars in the background. The sun is represented by the three dimensional circular shape above her head, the moon is represented in the righthand corner as a dark blue sun like shape with stars alongside it.

It is hard to capture the quality of the gold leaf in a photo but the painting changes as you move from side to side. The gold leaf has layers of oil paint on top of it, so it has different reflective qualities. The stars and floral shapes are created using a medieval recipe for gold leafing elements, which raises them up against the surface and makes them catch light, which is hard to capture in photographs.

The frames are all hand made by me. They are made from poplar and painted with archival acrylic and gold leaf, then sealed with a matte varnish. Ready to hang. Feel free to message me with any questions.
