"A Throughway"

This framed 9x13 inch piece is about the homes black women create for ourselves. Our own little sanctuaries that we assemble piece by piece. The home is so key in feeling centered. But it’s also about the doors that open to next chapters, new environments. Those openings that create a sense of hope.

This artwork depicts a woman within a richly layered interior, surrounded by an abundance of patterned textiles, flowers, and fragments of everyday life. Her body is enveloped by the patchwork of fabrics, while her quiet, contemplative expression suggests a moment of pause between where she has been and where she is going.

The composition is built from collage elements including striped textiles, geometric shapes, floral patterns, animal prints, woven textures, and fragments of brightly colored fabric. The patchwork dress becomes an important part of the composition, visually connecting the woman to the environment around her. The many overlapping patterns and materials create a sense of movement, as though the space itself is shifting around her.

The rich palette of deep navy, rust, brown, gold, burgundy, pink, orange, yellow, teal, and green adds warmth and depth to the work. A Throughway explores the experience of entering new phases of life, particularly those moments when one is no longer where they were, but has not yet fully arrived at what comes next. The woman sits within this in-between space, surrounded by remnants of the familiar while moving toward something new.

The piece is framed.
