Every canvas has a surface. This one has two kinds of surface, and they don't pretend to be the same thing.

A strip of printed linen — an image of the artist's own earlier painting — runs diagonally across the piece, its torn edges gilded rather than hidden. Above it, freshly painted branches rise in dimensional acrylic. Below it, roots descend into bare, unpainted linen, reaching into nothing but the raw material itself.

The piece explores an old idea in a new material form: that ordinary life — its stress, its small daily emergencies — is real without being the deepest thing available. There's another direction, quieter, less reactive, that every contemplative tradition has pointed toward. This painting doesn't argue for abandoning the surface. It simply shows the roots reaching somewhere else.

Part surface, part depth, entirely made by hand — this is a painting built to be looked at twice.
