About Vadim Vaskovsky

Biography

Born in 1973 Graduated Grekov College of Art, Odessa, Ukraine in 1990.
Professional artist since 1999. Numerous exhibitions in leading Canadian galleries, as well as in galleries in Ukraine (Odessa, Kiev). My art works can be found in private and public collections in Europe, Canada and the United States.

I work in a broad range of mediums and subjects, as an artist, illustrator and graphic designer. I experiment all the time. That is why I change themes and styles as often as I change a place of living. Asia dazzles me with its saturation. Black Sea coast reminds me of ancient myths. Cuba makes my lines dance. The Newfoundland landscape teaches me moderation and silence.

My art is about telling stories yet trying to find a breaking point when painting material applied on canvas, transforms into what it represents. I want strokes and fills to remain material in its texture, shape and pigment to achieve an ornamental look of the painting. Brushes, palette knives, combs, sticks are used in the impasto method of applying oil or acrylic paints.

I pull out objects of depiction onto the surface of the canvas or set them visually in front or behind the surface. Work knows what it wants. Form tells me about itself. I paint and translate. This language has its main roots in synthetic cubism developed by Picasso and Braque a hundred years ago. I found it quite flexible for what I presently want to do in search of concrete forms of my sensations and perceptions to get to the heart of what is before me.
