About Diannah Lowry

Biography

My name is Diannah Lowry, I’m a contemporary artist from Australia, now living in Devon. A visual artist now, but I started off as a musician (and still am), later studying for an MA and PhD in Psychology, before becoming an academic in universities in Australia and the UK. I made the switch to full time artist some years ago and haven’t looked back. While I don’t have a formal fine arts degree I have studied art throughout my education, including studying art in the Australian equivalent of A Levels in England, and studying both Aesthetics and Art History as part of my MA. Later, in a bid to keep sane during the rigours of my PhD studies, I studied life drawing at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. My passion and inspiration lie in the parallel themes of both ‘pure’ abstract expression and in capturing the drama of the landscape around me. My recent work has involved exploring the visual aspects of musical notation and different musical genres, as well as delving in and painting childhood memories. Alongside such explorations I also like to paint the magic of the Dartmoor landscape which is close to where I live. My favoured medium is acrylics, although I sometimes use cold wax and oil. The size of my work varies according to subject matter, and while some of my work is small (50cm) I prefer to work on medium to large artworks. The smaller works are typically a base work on which to further inform larger paintings. My recent exhibitions include the 2025 London Art Biennale at the Old Chelsea Town Hall, and the 2025 ING Discerning Eye Exhibition at Mall Galleries (where my painting sold on the Collectors PV night). This year I was selected for the inaugural Peirson & Peirson Art Prize at the Peirson & Peirson Contemporary Art Gallery in Plymouth, where my work is currently on show. I’ve sold work directly on-line to buyers in the UK, Germany and Australia, and a selection of my work is currently available online through Wychwood Art Gallery.
In addition to Artfinder work is also currently for sale online through Wychwood Art Gallery, in gallery at the Mooch Art and Makers Gallery (formerly the Cider Press Gallery) in Dartington, as well as with the Gagliardi Art Gallery in Chelsea. I’m drawn to Artfinder because of the support it gives artists in facilitating the sharing of their work globally, by the quality of the artwork it curates, and because it allows artists to connect with each other in the wider art community.
