Bejewelled (2025) Original Acrylic Painting by Diannah Lowry

This painting is part of my 'Bejewelled' series, inspired by my love of the abstract qualities of mineral stones, polished stones and gemstones, and how they reflect light. Its inspiration came from a visit to Carnac, where I found a shop with an Aladdin's cave of beautiful mineral jewellery and polished stones. I think I spent as long in the shop as I did exploring Carnac's wonderous standing stones! I loved the light and the transparent quality of many of the polished stones, their luminescence and layers of different colours. This work was a joy to paint.
In this work I used a variety of transparent acrylic colours, and used wax crayon for vigorous mark making to emphasise the different shapes found in the mineral stones. While mineral stones appear static, I was keen to provide a hint of the geology and forces which would have formed them.
It comes ready to hang in a white tray frame, which brings out the colours and different mark making in the work.
