About Alan Bateman

  • Biography
My creative process begins with the landscapes and buildings where I live. Although I may be informed by photographs or other artists, I need to start by reacting viscerally to what is in front of me. If I do not feel connection to the subject then I find the art I produce will not satisfy me and probably won’t get finished.

I need the art I produce to be overall aesthetically pleasing to me and this has more importance than trying to “represent” the subject. The process of making the painting can also determine the finished product as much as the subject. Having said that there probably is no finishing, and the end of one artwork is often the beginning of the next.
I am a romantic painter at heart and I view the landscape through the lens of social and landscape history, vernacular architecture, folklore and ecology. I also view it within the context of early twentieth century European and British art.
