Yosemite, California. August 2003.

Just before the sun goes down.

The granite is warm underfoot. The valley drops away on both sides — pine forests tumbling down into the shadows — and right there, dead centre, the sun is burning its way through the gap between the mountains. Blazing white. The whole frame flooded with it.
This is Yosemite at its most elemental. No people. No noise. Just rock, trees, light and the knowledge that in a few minutes this will be gone and there will never be another moment exactly like it.
Same August trip that produced El Capitan at first light — the same woodsmoke in the air, the same extraordinary valley. Two different moments. Two completely different moods.

Shot on a Leica M6 with Kodak Portra NC film, drum scanned and printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag. Full frame, never cropped, exactly as it was.

Each print is made entirely by hand in Gary's own studio. Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by Gary himself. Never outsourced. Always personal.
