Yosemite Sunlight

Yosemite, California. August 2003.

Just before the sun goes down.

I'd spent the day exploring Yosemite, and as the light began to fade, the sun found a gap between the mountains. The granite was still warm underfoot. The valley dropped away on either side, with pine forests disappearing into the shadows.

Then the sun came straight through the gap. Blazing white, flooding the frame with light. For a few seconds, everything else seemed to disappear.

I love Yosemite for moments like this. You can spend the whole day looking at an extraordinary landscape, but sometimes it's the last few minutes of light that stay with you. You can't plan it, and you can't make it happen again in quite the same way.

This was the same August trip that produced El Capitan, photographed at first light. Two different moments in the same valley, with completely different moods.

Shot on my Leica M6 with Kodak Portra NC film, drum-scanned and printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag. Full frame, never cropped, exactly as I saw it.

The print

Every print is made in my own studio and checked carefully before packing. I use plastic-free packaging and Hahnemühle Photo Rag archival paper for its tonal range and finish.

Limited edition of 50, signed and numbered, with a certificate of authenticity.
