VELASCO (2010) Linocut by David Conn

The print Velasco is different from the rest of the series in shape, long and slender not vertical, a visual indicator of man standing erect but welcoming the horizontal, a reference to mother earth or she. The print is a visual narrative, less like Odysseus travels, more like a one day journey through a river side park. The viewer is led from left to right as reading a book. I set the scene visually from total darkness to brilliant light, from the darkness of morning to the setting of the sun. What lingers in between are bridge tones sometimes referred to as mid tones or veils of dappled light. It’s all about the in-between, the quiet uncluttered places. The quick fleeting moment, once noticed never to appear the same. The pause is found in lyrical voices and musical chords, the medieval symbol of a big sound is a large square. The print has a panoramic, cylindric, almost circus tent look with three tilted verticals holding the form. The verticals are a result of nature’s way to alter the patterns of life. A tornado tore through here twelve years ago on its way to Oklahoma.
