Varnished shoes (2024) Original Collage by Sophie HORS

Varnished shoes is a mixed media artwork inspired b@y an image seen on an advertising poster in the Parisian metro. I reinterpreted the original composition by focusing on its distinctive framing, unexpected perspective and contrasting decorative patterns. The work depicts a young woman, crouching in profile, her arms resting in her knees, with her hand joined. Rather than showing the upper part of her body, I cropped the figure to place emphasis on her clothing and graphic qualities of the composition. The outfit becomes the central visual element; I selected, cut and applied delicate papers to recreate the various patterns, combining painting and collage in a process that balances precision with spontaneity. The hands are made using a printed photograph, carefully cut out and collaged onto the painted surface. I painted the wooden canvas in a deep green. The result is playful with a strong graphic character.
